Jack Russell Terriers originated in Great Britain more than a hundred years ago. They were bred by the Reverend Russell, a great foxhunting enthusiast and dog lover. The breed has retained its working qualities over time and is now used in tracking, hunting, and other activities.

Nowadays, the Jack Russell Terrier is well distributed in Great Britain and France. It is also gaining popularity in the United States, which can be attributed to the great success of movies that the breed was filmed in. The Jack Russell Terrier is considered second to none in hunting the badger and the fox. The dog often works with hounds tracking the prey. Its main task, though, is cornering the fox in its den and making it accessible to hunters.

Jack Russell Terriers - Dogs - What Do They Look Like?

Jack Russell Terrier dogs come in two varieties, short-legged and long-legged ones. Both are compactly built, with well-developed muscles. Short-legged Jack Russell Terriers should reach the height of about 8-12 inches when measured at the withers. The long-legged Jack Russell Terrier is about 12-14 inches. Bitches are slightly smaller than dogs.

Balance is of paramount importance in the breed. The head should be proportionate with the rest of the body. The bones should be neither heavy, nor light. Dark eyes are of medium size. The ears are v-shaped.

The Jack Russell Terrier can have a smooth or broken coat. Both types are coarse and waterproof. Color pattern varies from white, white with black and lemon markings, to tri-color.

Jack Russell Terriers - Dogs - What to Expect in the Dog?

Jack Russell Terriers are not recommended for inexperienced owners. Their hunting instincts cannot be bred out even if you are going to use the dog solely as a companion. The breed has a lot of energy that has to find an outlet. When left alone for long periods of time, Jack Russell Terriers tend to take care of the entertainment on their own. A bored Jack Russell Terrier will find a flowerbed an attractive place to play games. It can also enjoy the idea of chasing a cat or investigating the neighborhood.

On the other hand, the high energy level of the breed turns into an advantage for people who cannot imagine their life without much activity. The Jack Russell Terrier is said to be a wonderful companion for jogging, hiking, and surely, for hunting.

As for children, they should be taught how to deal with dogs to avoid unpleasant incidents. Jack Russells are generally good with children when raised together from an early age. Other canines and small animals should not make excessive use of the breed's friendly personality. Jack Russell Terriers tend to dislike same-sexed dogs.
